As it turns out, learning to speak Lao isn't as easy as just surrounding yourself with Lao people and eating a lot of sticky rice. It's been a month now and I still don't have the 27 constants or 28 vowels memorized. I know compound constants and special vowels are a thing...but don't ask me what they are.
There’s something funny about not knowing what noises to make with your mouth to get your point across. I know a handful of phrases and when those fall short I resort to gestures. It must be hilarious to watch me play charades from the other side of the language barrier.
You don’t need to know a word of Lao to play tag or red light/green light. No one knows that better than the students from Ansan University in South Korea. I tagged along with them during their visit to a primary school in Laos.
